Corrections in Canada Practice Exam

In this period, punishments in early Canada were primarily punitive, public, and meant to deter and mark criminals. Flogging was a common corporal penalty, administered publicly to discipline offenders. Branding was used to leave a lasting stigma on the offender, a visible mark of their crime. Public executions served as the ultimate display of authority and deterrence for severe offenses.

Community service, by contrast, emerged much later as part of reform efforts and restorative justice approaches. It did not appear as a typical or formal punishment in the 1600–1800 era. That’s why it’s the item that doesn’t fit with the others.
